Visit from Maud Blair at Sawston
Pupils at Sawston Village College were very lucky to have Maud Blair visit recently to speak to them and staff about her experiences of British rule in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). They heard first hand about how extreme attitudes were to race in Rhodesia as Maud was sent to a boarding school at the age of 4 and not able to have any contact with her family for 3 years.
The pupils asked some really interesting questions about Maud’s life in Zimbabwe and were able to gain valuable insights into the impact and legacy of the British Empire today. After school, staff were also invited to hear Maud speak within the school’s Professional Learning discussion group, on the really important subject of how to tackle the issue of race in the classroom. She gave some extremely valuable insights and staff commented on how useful the session was in moving thinking on race forwards.
