Owls Class enjoyed an inspiring and energetic day of learning as they welcomed Riley from The Noisy Classroom for a special debating workshop. Our Year 5 pupils were introduced to the world of formal debate and quickly discovered just how powerful their voices can be.
Throughout the workshop, Riley equipped the children with a range of important communication skills. They learned how to listen actively, challenge ideas respectfully and speak with confidence in front of an audience — skills that will support them not only in school, but far beyond.
One of the highlights of the session was exploring how debates are conducted in the House of Commons. Owls Class were fascinated to discover the structure, rules and traditions behind parliamentary debate, and were eager to try out some techniques for themselves. It wasn’t long before the classroom was buzzing with thoughtful, lively discussion.
Their chosen motion was a big one: “Should children be allowed smartphones?”
Both sides presented well-reasoned, convincing arguments, impressing us with their clarity, confidence and maturity. The children listened to each other with respect and responded with passion, demonstrating exactly what effective debating looks like.
Workshops like this help our pupils grow as thinkers, communicators and future leaders. Today, Owls Class absolutely shone.
Well done, Owls.
