Members of Anglian Learning were proud to present a workshop at Cambridgeshire Virtual Schools’ recent conference, ‘A Caring Cambridgeshire.’

The event, held at Hinxton Hall Conference Centre in Cambridge, brought together professionals from education, social care, health, and other sectors to exchange ideas on supporting all children to thrive.

Anglian Learning’s workshop was led by Camilla Saunders, Director of Inclusion, who introduced attendees to our Trust’s Belonging by Design initiative. She emphasised the vital role that a sense of belonging plays in pupils’ engagement and success at school.

Supporting Camilla were Sam Barnes, Specialist Attendance Lead, Lucy Millard, Specialist Teacher, and Chris Tooley, Principal of The Netherhall School.

Sam Barnes shared insights into the ongoing work to improve attendance across Anglian Learning’s schools. His presentation highlighted that research into school attendance emphasised: “Non-attendance is rarely about ‘refusing school’ – it’s about struggling to attend”.

Lucy Millard shared resources she develops and shares with our Trust’s SENCOs, including the termly newsletter ‘Spotlight on SEND.’ This publication provides targeted advice, guidance, and resources to support pupils with special educational needs and disabilities

Chris Tooley concluded the workshop by detailing how a focus on relational culture has significantly reduced suspensions at The Netherhall School, a large secondary school in Cambridge.

Attendees also participated in a variety of workshops throughout the day and were inspired by keynote speakers Paul Dix and Maureen McKenna.

Reflecting on the event, Camilla Saunders said, “It was a successful day, with plenty of positive feedback on our workshop. I am grateful to Sam, Lucy, and Chris for helping showcase the brilliant and innovative approaches Anglian Learning is taking to ensure our pupils feel a strong sense of belonging.”
