Holocaust Memorial Day
Monday 27th January marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps established by Adolf Hitler as part of the Nazi and their collaborators’ plan to murder all the Jews in Europe. With 6 million Jews slaughtered during the war, it is viewed as one of the darkest times for mankind.
As a College, Bassingbourn Village College, marks this date every year with our students and this year was no exception. As part of our mentor time, assemblies were ran by our Vice Principal, Ms Warwick, who shared her experience of visiting Auschwitz and some of her memories and photos captured at the time; from the book with all the names of those that died at the camp, to the room with photos – it was a very moving assembly.
In addition, during Year 8 Drama, our students have been watching The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas as well as working on performances to the poem “Auschwitz” by Carles N Whittaker.
