No Pens Day

A number of our schools had a fun day of learning as part of Speech and Language UK‘s No Pens Day on Wednesday.

At Stapleford Community Primary School, interactive lessons focused on building pupil’s speech and language skills. In Reception class, the children were learning Makaton signs, while in Year 2, pupils had the opportunity to demonstrate Christmas songs in sign language. Year 1 used Artificial Technology (AI) to enhance their verbal descriptions of a fairy-tale house. They discovered that using adjectives in their descriptions resulted in the computer generating more detailed images.

In Key Stage 2, pupils thoroughly enjoyed games of “20 Questions” and engaging in carefully planned show-and-tell sessions. Highlights included presentations about zoo trips and the discovery of fascinating rocks from Iceland.

At Marleigh Primary Academy, the whole school took part in the ‘Big Show and Tell’, with pupils excited to share their special items with their friends. Following the activity, one pupil said I really liked the show and tell because we got to see what is special for everyone.”

The day raises vital awareness of the 1.9 million children who struggle with talking and understanding words. It is a chance for pupils to put their pens away and talk, listen and get creative with their learning.
