Friday 21st March is World Poetry Day: a day to celebrate poets and poetry. During Monday’s whole class assembly, we celebrated poetry by reading my favourite poems from the poetry books in each class’s book nook. A challenge was set for the school: who could recite a poem off by heart?! The pupils were very keen to take up this challenge and took home poetry books from the library and their book nooks so they could choose their favourite and learn it off by heart by Thursday when I would be back at Wimbish Primary Academy. As soon as I set foot into school, the pupils were asking when they could recite their poem to me! I listened to the 10 pupils who responded to the challenge and was completely amazed as to how they were not only able to read their poem without looking at the words but did so with confidence, enjoyment, fluency and with no or very little prompting!
