Schools play a pivotal role in shaping the future. Not just through their curriculum, but also by encouraging crucial values like environmental sustainability. Recycling promotes a sense of community engagement and teamwork, creating a shared responsibility for the planet’s well-being. As we navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing world, our schools and site teams show their commitment to combating unnecessary waste.
For example, at Bottisham Community Primary School, the Eco Council runs a second-hand uniform shop (50p per item). The funds raised from this are used to purchase resources that support Eco Council projects and wildlife-friendly planting around the school. The uniform which does not sell goes into textile recycling.
At Joyce Frankland Academy Newport, large catering tins used by the kitchen are upcycled into planters for the garden. Used plant pots are collected from Scotsdales Garden Centre and utilised for planting around the school. They also recycle plastic bottles and paper/cardboard in most classrooms and office spaces. In an average week, they achieve the following figures in recycled waste:
- Paper/cardboard/plastic bottles: 5500 litres
- Food waste for compost to Elgin: 200 litres
- General waste: 5500 litres
All these efforts benefit our planet and hold cost-saving elements for both schools and their families. Anglian Learning continues to pave the way to being a fully sustainable Trust.
